The recording and classification of vehicles using inductive loops and their individual vehicle weights by means of independent Weigh-in-Motion systems/dynamic axle load scales (WIM) are classical technologies used in vehicle data gathering. The volume of heavy goods traffic (HGVs) has been growing continuously for some years and the monitoring of vehicle dimensions is therefore increasingly gaining in importance.

Using the SICK Vehicle Profiling System (VPS), vehicles can be measured in flowing traffic and this represents a sensible addition to the database, particularly in WIM installations. The profilers are mounted on a supporting structure (e.g. sign gantry) and, among other things, record the vehicle height, length and width. Camera systems can also be used if the requirements for vehicle monitoring/documentation are greater.
